Sandwich Harbour

Leaving Walvis Bay we head for the lower Kuiseb River Delta, passing the Walvis Bay Lagoon with its abundance of birdlife and masses of flamingoes on the way. The Kuiseb River Delta river bed might offer a surprise or two in the form of the odd springbok and eventually crossing the dunes to reach Sandwhich Harbour lagoon, which ranks amongst Southern Africa’s richest wetlands.

The Sandwhich Harbour lagoon are wedged between the dunes and the Atlantic Ocean. Potable water are seeping from the underground aquifer which sustains the freshwater vegetation that grows at the base of the dunes.
